The Abolition Show

1856

This campaign song, with lyrics by Stephen C. Foster and his brother Morrison Foster, is sung to the tune of “Villikins and His Dinah.” The song supports the presidential candidacy of Democrat James Buchanan over Republican John C. Fremont in the 1856 election. Buchanan’s brother, Edward Buchanan, was married to Stephen and Morrison’s sister Ann Eliza. The lyrics of nine of the verses were published in the Pittsburgh Morning Post on September 26, 1856.

“Ah! My Child!” is an operatic aria by Giacomo Meyerbeer with an English text by Stephen C. Foster. There is no record of copyright entry or deposit. The publisher’s plate number, 1230, and the location of Foster's drafts of the lyrics in his sketchbook suggest a date of publication in late summer 1851.

The nine songs of the set are “Und was die Sonne glüht,” “The Water-lily,” “Träumerei,” “Es tönt in meinen Ohren,” “Love Seemeth Terrible,” “Sleeping Love,” “Sterne überall,” “Vorschlag,” “Nights of Music,” and “Farewell.” The Adolph M. Foerster Collection includes a manuscript for the seventh song in Foerster’s hand dated June 4, 1899. Additional songs from the set are found Foerster’s bound volume of music.

Adolph M. Foerster’s orchestral composition American Ode, op. 81, was published in 1922. The manuscript full score in the composer’s hand indicates that the work premiered at the Pittsburg Exposition on September 23, 1913, by the Russian Symphony Orchestra under conductor Modeste Altschuler.

The earliest copies state on the title page “as sung by the Christy and Campbell Minstrels and New Orleans Serenaders.” Later copies only listed the Christy Minstrels at Edwin P. Christy’s request.

A manuscript for “Autumn Waltz” was discovered in a binder’s volume in 1988. This presentation copy was prepared for the dedicatee who lived at Freedom (Beaver County) near Pittsburgh in the 1840s. Because the song was unknown in the early 1930s when the Foster Hall Reproductions were made, it is not present in that edition. The song was published for the first time in The Music of Stephen C. Foster: A Critical Edition, by Deane Root and Steven Saunders (Smithsonian Institute Press, 1990).
