Adolph M. Foerster’s Piano Quartet No. 2 received its premiere on January 1, 1896, at Carnegie Hall in Pittsburgh. According to a note written by Foerster on the manuscript of the full score, the performers included Eugene C. Heffley (piano), Adolph Rothmeyer (violin), Harry Hetzel (viola), and C. H. W. Ruhe (cello). The score also indicates it was performed again on May 7, 1897, at the Pittsburgh Club Theater on Penn Avenue. That performance included Edward Rothleder (violin), Harry Hetzel (viola), Arthur Metzdorff (cello), and Foerster on piano.

According to Evelyn Foster Morneweck’s The Chronicles of Stephen Foster’s Family: “Before leaving for New York, he sent to Firth, Pond in 1860, ‘Poor Drooping Maiden,’ ‘None Shall Weep a Tear for Me,’ ‘The Wife; or He’ll Come Home,’ ‘Under the Willow She’s Sleeping,’ probably ‘Cora Dean,’ and one good song, ‘The Glendy Burk,’ composed in his best old-time manner.”

This manuscript in Adolph M. Foerster’s hand is dated March 10, 1899. It may be a draft of a movement from his Twelve Phantasy Pieces for Piano, op. 38, which was published by Kleber in Pittsburgh in 1894. Among those pieces are two movements titled “Prelude” and “Antique.”
