Stephen Foster (b. July 4, 1826, Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania; d. January 13, 1864, New York) was one of the first American songwriters to earn a living through composition alone. Many of his songs, most of which were for the parlor or minstrel stage, achieved great popularity during his lifetime and continue to be popular today. His songs depicting African Americans, however, have been controversial since they were written.

Four Love Songs, op. 65, is a set of songs for voice and orchestra by Adolph M. Foerster. The songs in the set are “I Love Thee” (poetry by Thomas Hood),  “Love Thee, Dearest?” (poetry by Thomas Moore), “Love’s Litany” (poetry by Wallace Bruce), and “To See Thee, To Love Thee” (poetry by Thomas Moore). Manuscripts in the composer’s hand for the third song, “Love’s Litany,” are found in the Adolph M. Foerster Collection.

Adolph M. Foerster’s Four Songs, op. 45, was published in 1897. The score of the first song erroneously labels it “opus 43.” The songs in the set are “The Grecian Isles,” “She Walks in Beauty,” “Shepherd’s Lament,” and “When Thou Art Nigh.” A partial manuscript in the composer’s hand exists for the first song, and the published scores of the first three songs can be found in the Adolph M. Foerster Collection.

Frontis Burbank Wiggins’ Collection of Bing Crosby Materials

Frontis Burbank (Wig) Wiggins Jr. (1929–2019) was an internationally recognized expert on American popular singer, radio host, and actor Bing Crosby (1903–1977). He served for decades as the American Representative for the International Club Crosby, a Bing Crosby fan club. In his role with the Club, he developed enduring friendships with Bing enthusiasts all over the world, trading rare recordings and documenting and preserving Crosby’s musical legacy.

Garland of Songs, op. 64, is a set of songs for medium and high voice by Adolph M. Foerster. The songs in Book 1 (for medium voice) are “Song of the Soul,” “The Starless Night,” “The Starlit Night,” “The Robin’s Lullaby,” “’Tis the Last Rose of Summer,” and “The Silent Sea.” The songs in Book 2 (for high voice) are “To the Beloved,” “Love Me If I Live,” “Heart Song,” “Love Alone,” “Enraptured,” and “Sun of the Sleepless.”

Manuscripts in the composer’s hand for “Heart Song,” “Love Alone,” and “The Robin’s Lullaby” are found in the Adolph M. Foerster Collection.
