A guitar arrangement was published in 1855, although there is no record of copyright entry or deposit. Beginning with “Come with Thy Sweet Voice Again,” Firth, Pond, & Co. did not copyright any of Foster’s arrangements for voice and guitar.

Evelyn Foster Morneweck writes in The Chronicles of Stephen Foster’s Family, “After his return from the South in March, 1852, Stephen published that year ‘Massa’s in de Cold Ground,’ ‘The Hour for Thee and Me,’ ‘I Cannot Sing Tonight,’ and ‘Maggie by My Side.’”

“I Would Not Die in Spring Time” was entered for copyright deposit on October 15, 1850, by F. D. Benteen of Baltimore. It was originally published under the pseudonym Milton Moore, but there is no doubt that the song was composed by Foster. He recorded royalties for the song in his account book, and his brother Morrison notated in the margin of “Old Folks at Home Variations” that Milton Moore was Foster’s nom de plume.
