“Anthem for Easter: Christ the Lord Is Risen To-Day” is for SATB quartet and organ, featuring alto and tenor solos and soprano and tenor duet. William H. Oetting indicated on the autograph manuscript that he completed the composition in Berlin on January 23, 1901. The manuscript resides in the William Oetting Collection.

Anthems is a set of five sacred choral songs by Adolph M. Foerster. The first two songs were published in 1903, the third in 1904, and the last two in 1905. The songs include “Lead us Heavenly Father,” “The Spring-tide Hour,” “Ave Verum,” “Out of the Deep,” and “Christ is Our Cornerstone.”

Bury Me in the Morning, Mother

Although no complete copyright deposit exists in the Library of Congress for “Bury Me in the Morning, Mother” a copy was deposited on January 31, 1863, by Horace Waters of New York. After being released as a single sheet, the song was published in Waters’ Golden Harp for Sunday Schools (New York: Horance Waters, 1863).  It then appeared in The Athenaeum Collection of Hymns and Tunes for Church and Sunday School (New York: Horace Waters, 1863). In 1864 Waters published the song in sheet music format as No. 20 in his “Foster’s Melodies” series.

Charles and Frankie Pace Collection

Charles Henry Pace (1886–1963) began his career as a composer, director, and publisher of Black gospel music in Chicago, where he made some of the first recordings of early Black gospel standards with his group the Pace Jubilee Singers between 1926 and 1929. He met and married Frankie (1905–1989) in the early 1930s, and in 1936 they moved to Pittsburgh, eventually establishing their publishing business in the Hill District neighborhood.

Charles N. Boyd Collection

Charles N. (Newell) Boyd (December 2, 1875–April 24, 1937) was born in Pleasant Unity, Pennsylvania, son of the Rev. A. Fulton Boyd and Ann Paul Boyd. He attended the Poland Union Seminary and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1894. An accomplished pianist and organist, he was a founding member of the Pittsburgh Musical Institute, which opened its doors on May 1, 1915.
