About American Music at Pitt

American Music at Pitt (AMP) is a unique resource for discovering digitized materials pertaining to American music from the University of Pittsburgh Library System’s archival and special collections. Although AMP is especially strong in music from Pittsburgh and the United States, “American music” is broadly defined so that as more materials are added AMP will eventually include music composed or performed by musicians from North, South, and Central America, as well as the Caribbean.

AMP is specifically designed for browsing and searching for music. Titles of songs, compositions, and recorded performances are found under the “Music” heading. Under each title can be found manuscripts, published score editions and parts, recordings, and links to related materials.

AMP is highly curated. In addition to basic metadata, digitized items include substantial (and growing) descriptions of historical context. There are also exhibits that further explain materials and make connections across various archives.

If you have questions, or if you or your students are interested in contributing exhibits to AMP, please contact us through Ask an Archivist.
