Herman Mishkin (1871–1948) was a Russian-American photographer of opera singers. Born in Minsk, Russia, Mishkin immigrated to the United States in 1885. After buying a camera during the amateur photography boom of the 1880s, he began working with the Manhattan Opera Company as a photographer-publicist and developed skills in portraiture. Mishkin first supplied the Metropolitan Opera with photographs in 1905 and became the company’s photographer of choice for lobby shots and portraits from 1910 to 1932. In the early years of his tenure at the Metropolitan, he persuaded operatic set painters to supply him with artful studio backdrops.
